Papers People. A lot of research has been done on gender and sexuality in the Western context. Discussions on Western masculinity for example are not in their infancy.

A similar level of research on gender in China, whether about modern or pre-modern A similar level of research on gender in China, whether about modern or pre-modern China, can not be found.

Although there have been a number of important publications on Chinese femininity since the 's 1 , yet Chinese masculinity lacks attention. There are several reasons why I find it important to do research on Chinese masculinity.

First, the lack of focus on masculinity in comparison to femininity can result in a narrow-minded outlook on the term 'gender', since 'gender' might become synonymous with 'woman'.

Take analyses with reference to Chinese cinema for example. When Chinese masculinity is made clearer, it not only informs the viewer in giving a deeper understanding of what Chinese masculinity is, but it may also lead to a paradigm shift in our understanding of masculinity.

Furthermore, defining Chinese masculinity may lead to more sympathy from non-Chinese viewers and avoid misunderstandings and confusion. In the first half of this paper I will provide a summary of Chinese masculinity in ancient China, where wen-wu and yin-yang dichotomies are used to explain Chinese masculinity.

The wen-wu and yin-yang dichotomies are a paradigm defined by modern Western scholars, like Louie and Song for example. Then, after clarifying the notion Chinese masculinity by utilizing the wen-wu and yin-yang dichotomies, I will examine the relation between Chinese masculinity and Bruce Lee's masculinity in the film Fist of Fury 3.

My motivation for the choice of Fist is because I have not found scholarly research on Chinese masculinity in context of wen-wu and yin-yang dichotomies in Fist so far. Save to Library. He is perhaps most widely known for his pioneering Energy Considerations regarding the Straight Lead Punch. In this study, the independent relative contribution of rotation and translation in straight lead punch execution to the energy-transfer to a standardized target is determined with an empirical experiment.

To create a set of standardized To create a set of standardized straight lead punch variations, a qualitative theoretical model is created to help dissecting the straight lead punch into key elements. Measurements are made with a high-speed camera and the data is further analyzed with specialized software. The data is statistically analyzed using SPSS. Results show that there is a significant difference in energy-transfer to the target, between several straight lead punch variations.

It is recommended to further refine and improve the straight lead punch model and use it in conjunction with other existing models to form a complete mathematical biomechanical model of the straight lead punch, including the target, from start to finish.

Martial ideation refers to a Martial ideation refers to a specific negotiation of action and stasis in martial arts performance which contains a powerful overflow of emotion in tranquility. Since the early s, Bruce Lee's kung fu films have been labeled "chop-socky," offering only fleeting visual and visceral pleasures.

Subsequently, several studies explored the cultural significance and political implications of Lee's films. However, not much attention has been paid to their aesthetic composition-in particular, how cinematic kung fu manifests Chinese aesthetics and philosophy on choreographic, cinematographic, and narrative levels. In Lee's films, the concept of martial ideation is embodied in the Daoist notion of wu nothingness , a metaphysical void that is invisible, nameless, and formless.

The former refers to a paradigmatic shift from concreteness to emptiness, while the latter makes such a shift reversible and perennial via the motif of circularity. The discussion focuses on films in which Lee's creative influence is clearly discernible, such as Fist of Fury , The Way of the Dragon , and the surviving footage intended for The Game of Death featured in Bruce Lee: A Warrior's Journey These films shed light on the complicated relationship between the cinematic action and stasis , the martial Jeet Kune Do , the aesthetic ideation , and the philosophical Daoism.

The goal is to stimulate a more balanced discussion of Lee's films both from the perspective of global action cinema and Chinese culture. Game of text: Bruce Lee's media legacies. All three of these arts were founded by experienced practitioners who took personal and social crises as stimulus for creativity. On the basis of comparing these three cases, I propose a theory of martial creation, which I invite other martial arts studies scholars to test and explore further.
