An EcoDisc is a patented type of DVD which is thinner than a conventional DVD because it is made from a single layer of polycarbonate instead of two layers glued together. Because it contains less material, its manufacture produces only around half of the carbon dioxide of a conventional DVD,   and the absence of a non-biodegradable toxic glue layer makes it easier to recycle. The discs are used for covermounts by magazine publishers because their flexibility makes them less prone to damage during handling and transportation than rigid conventional DVDs and shipping costs are reduced because of their lower weight. The EcoDisc initially called Greenstar is a gearless hoisting machine for traction elevators made by Kone. It was introduced in along with the Kone MonoSpace elevators, the first machine room less elevator system in the world. The EcoDisc has becoming a flagship range of products of the company. The idea of EcoDisc occurred in the early s when Harri Hakala, an engineer working for Kone, had the idea of elevators with a motorized traction system instead of linear motors while he was jogging. Following this event, the team began took interest of developing the EcoDisc project. In when Kone began a pre-launch market trial for their MonoSpace elevator system, the EcoDisc, then called "Greenstar", was used in the first set of MonoSpace elevators sold in the Netherlands for a pilot project.
The technology used in the Kone Ecodisc is very advanced and entirely focussed on being a lightweight and efficient hoisting motor, as a result the Ecodisc has no inbuilt commutation feedback capability and therefore relies entirely on the elevator drives systems such as the V3F16L , V3F16ES , and KDL16L , to calculate the required torque and rpm for the elevator ascent and descent. As a result of the requirement for the torque calculations to be carried out and transmitted to the Ecodisc by the elevator drive it is impossible to fully function test an Ecodisc motor without a full cycle simulator.
