She wears a garland of severed heads. Her one hand blesses and offers boons to devotees. Her other hand holds another severed head, probably rakthabija's. She emphasizes terror, but also reassures tenderness.
Kali's story is as amazing as her personality traits. She fights her first war, and nothing is left for her to kill. She is blood-intoxicated and smashes already dead d Mahakali. She is blood-intoxicated and smashes already dead demons again and again. Only one can control and stop her - Shiva. He silently enters the battlefield and lies down among corpses, motionless.
She walks here and there, and she finds herself stepping over a handsome man with the ash's smell she is well aware of. Like every Indian wife, she feels guilty. Kali stretches out her blood colored tongue in shame, and destruction comes to an end.

I got this book for my birthday, after trying to put my hands on it for a while, so I couldn't wait to start reading it because I wanted to learn more about the story of goddess Kali and the way she is worshipped.
This book immediately made me wanting to visit the Dakshineswar Temple, as it's so well-written and educative that I felt like walking on the stairs of the Temple and seeing the altar with my own eyes. A very recommended read to everybody who's interested in the Goddess worship, Kali M I got this book for my birthday, after trying to put my hands on it for a while, so I couldn't wait to start reading it because I wanted to learn more about the story of goddess Kali and the way she is worshipped.
A very recommended read to everybody who's interested in the Goddess worship, Kali Ma, as well as Hinduism in general and the lives of those holy people who's great help made the existence of this temple possible. Aug 14, Henrik rated it it was ok. Not well-written, I expected it to be more about Kali herself, not so much about the dimensions of a room in her temple, so I was quite disappointed. Informative if you want a detailed description of how she is worshipped and by whom, I guess.

Kali : the black goddess of Dakshineswar
O Mother! Let me call Thee, Mother, for the last time; Come and take me in Thy arms. None loves in this world; This world knows not how to love; My heart yearns, O Mother, to go there, Where love reigns supreme. Though a taxi can drive all the way into the Dakshineswar Kali Temple Compound, it is more interesting to get out where the local buses stop and walk through the lively lane that leads to the temple. The lane resembles nothing a visitor may expect of a modern city street.
