I figure that some of what I share may prove useful to others starting campaigns. I'll also mention what resources I've found helpful to prepare and run the game. First some background on my experience. I have been gamemastering for nearly forty years now.

Hi Everyone, It's been a while since I've posted about games here. I'll start, as I like to, with some irrelevant backstory. RuneQuest was one of my first loves in RPGs. I got into gaming in when the world was young and, although I never got to play it at the time, RuneQuest is probably the reason why I'm still gaming now and have met and played games with so many wonderful, creative, and fun people down the years.

Once the novelty wore off, kicking down doors, killing monsters, and counting up the loot got repetitive. Yes, I know you could do a lot more with it. But our group didn't know it then. We were only 11 and we were figuring it out on our own, we still had some learning to do. But I saw a review of Call of Cthulhu in White Dwarf, and investigating stuff like monsters sounded much more my kind of thing than just killing stuff.

And it was, we had so much fun. Call of Cthulhu led me to RuneQuest. I saw that the same people who made Call of Cthulhu made some other game called RuneQuest and I thought if the Cthulhu people made it, it ought to be good. So I spent my Christmas money in on a RuneQuest 2 boxed set. Which blew my mind. It was amazing! It was a rich stew of myths and references to things that I barely understood. And that wonderful map of Dragon Pass that was in the book!

Oh, it lit up my imagination. Maps are my chief gaming kink and that one is a classic! There were mentions of gods and myths, and places and it all sounded fascinating even if I didn't have much idea what was going on.

But it looked so cool. I think I spent an entire afternoon the day I got it, trying to make my first character. I can also probably blame Ray Harryhausen and in particular Jason and the Argonauts, for making me think that the ancient world is cooler than the medieval one. RuneQuest with its pictures of warriors in Greek style armour, seemed very alive to me.

It was very much in tune with the other things I was reading and learning at the time. It was a perfect moment for me to imprint on Glorantha as if I was a little baby duck. Then it all went a bit wrong. Even worse, one of the players in my school gaming group flicked through my new shiny book and declared "This looks rubbish".

So we never played RuneQuest. Every time I suggested, it got shot down. I never did find out exactly what that chap didn't like. We played lots of other fun games, but never RuneQuest. RuneQuest became my great white whale of gaming. For 36 years, I wanted to play RuneQuest. In the 90s, everyone I knew wanted to play World of Darkness stuff.

And I played in and ran some great games. But none of them were RuneQuest. After the new version of RuneQuest was published last year - get it here, you know you want it!

I was so very, very happy. Finally, after almost 36 years of waiting, I was going to play RuneQuest. So we settled down over video chat because all three of us live in different places to make RuneQuest characters.

Of which, more in the next post. One day I will wax lyrical here about how good it is. Validated User. Yesssss, Runequest. Someone go get the ale and I'll grab the roasted grubs, it's time for some good stories. We did this a good few months ago.

Character creation was a long session. Partly because doing this over video chat always slows things down compared to having everyone sitting around the same table.

Partly because of unfamiliarity, being the first time any of us had made characters with this rules set. Partly because the players weren't familiar with Glorantha so when things were mentioned in the lifepaths or choices had to be made about cultures, gods or what-have-you, there was usually some discussion and explanation.

A group of veteran Glorantha players probably wouldn't need to have things explained to them like who the various gods are, or that horses are hated by the Praxian tribes, who the Lunar Empire are, etc. I do feel that was quite a good thing because it sparked a bit of thinking about the implications of these things, and helped spark off some ideas about stuff.

I felt the lifepaths were a good way to introduce Glorantha information as we went along. Players' mileage might vary, but it let me give them information one chunk at a time as we went through the years and build up some connection to the things that had been going on in the world.

Some details we filled in immediately, others we left open until some time later. For example, who exactly killed one character's grandmother was left open until last week's session of play, after more than a dozen sessions of play, when that PC and some High Llama riders were bonding over how much they all hate the Sable Tribe. I told the players to pick whatever cultures and professions they fancied from the book.

We got: Arim - a Tarsh Exile god-talker and initiate of Heler. Penraltan - a Pol Joni nomad hunter and initiate of Orlanth Adventurous.

For anyone who's not familiar with Glorantha, the Tarsh Exiles are die-hard holdouts against an expansionist empire the Lunar Empire which has colonised and somewhat "civilised" their country. The Exiles refused to give up their old ways and accept the new Lunar ways and went off into the hills.

They're mainly known for worshipping Maran Gor, the goddess of earthquakes, who is really rather scary. Heler is a god of rain, and of shepherds and sheep. He and his cultists are often non-binary in gender and very changeable and impulsive but are known for their loyalty to their friends. In the setting, "staunch as Heler" is a common saying. The Pol Joni are horse-riding steppe nomads.

They mostly worship the same pantheon as the Tarshites, though they emphasise different gods. And they are much less keen than the Tarshites are on human sacrifice. They live in Prax, a wasteland dominated by tribes of warring nomads. None of the others ride horses because they consider them taboo and hate them.

This tends to cause some friction Orlanth is the king of the Storm Pantheon. A god of storms, of brave warriors and adventurers who, honestly, mucks things up a lot like the time he killed the Sun god but puts it right by going into Hell and bringing the Sun god back.

We began by figuring out Runes, Passions, and Attributes. Characters start off with affinities for 3 elemental runes, and with paired ratings in power runes that "oppose" each other. So when you raise your Harmony rune, you will reduce your Disorder rune. Runes are used for magic, to give bonuses to skills and dice rolls, and to suggest personality traits. Someone strong in the Darkness rune, for example, is likely to be cold, cruel, and secretive.

While someone strong in the Air rune is likely to be impulsive, proud, and violent. All characters begin with a default set of passions from their homeland, cult, and occupation.

Apple Lane set a new standard for fantasy RPGs when it debuted in It consists of two main adventures: Gringle's Panwshop and the Rainbow Mounds. Lengthy background notes, five pages of maps and plans, complete NPCs with motivational profiles, tactical and contingency explanantions, and sample characters are all provided. Referees can start either adventure after little more than reading it and sketching the play area.

I ran this in June, but I am sorry to report that everybody found the attack on Gringle's Pawnshop to be a howler. The baboons especially was felt to be too ridiculous. This was compounded by the fact that in Runequest 2 body parts tend to fly off a lot! Plus the setup of "I am too busy to deal with an attack on my own pawnshop. The whole experience was a bit surreal to say the least. There may be plots and motivations in there but I seriously doubt that most can play them with a straight face. Of the two scenarios, "Gringle's Pawnshop" is the weakest and was probably intended as an introduction to the mechanics of combat.
