In the traditional fairy tale of 'Sleeping Beauty' the spell cast upon the lovely young princess can only be broken by the kiss of a prince. However, in the world of Anne Rice, this legendary curse is broken not with a kiss, but with sexual initiation. The Prince's reward for ending the hundred years of enchantment is Beauty's complete and total enslavement to him.

Sleeping Beauty awakes to a world of seduction, desire and love. In the first of a three part retelling of the Sleeping Beauty story, Anne Rice explores the unspoken implications of this lush, suggestive fairy tale, opening up a world of erotic yearning and fantasy which is perfect for fans of Fifty Shades of Grey. I read this as someone told me that it was much better written than Fifty Shades of Grey and had a better storyline in general.

I completely agree with this and although i wasn't completely blown away by the Please sign in to write a review. Anne Rice (Writing as A. N. Roquelaure) - The Sleeping Beauty Trilogy

The novels describe explicit sexual adventures of the female protagonist Beauty and the male characters Alexi, Tristan and Laurent, featuring both maledom and femdom scenarios amid vivid imageries of bisexuality , homosexuality, ephebophilia and pony play. In , the abridged audio versions of the first three books were published in cassette form. Neither of them gave her the critical acclaim or the commercial success of her first novel; the main complaints about The Feast of All Saints were that it was too heavy and dense to read easily, [5] and most of the reviews for Cry to Heaven were so savagely negative that Rice felt devastated. Roquelaure from the French word Roquelaure , referring to a cloak worn by men in the 18th-century Europe.

The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty

I've always loved the fairy tale Sleeping Beauty, and found something erotic at its core. The Prince awakens Beauty with a kiss. And I thought, all right, what if he brought a kind of liberation, an induction into a world of bizarre yet irresistible delights? It has to be remembered that within the frame of a sadomasochistic fantasy like the Beauty trilogy, the readers are invited to identify with and enjoy the predicament of the slaves. The books aren't about literal cruelty; they're about surrender, the fun of imagining you have no choice but to enjoy sex. Beauty's slavery is delicious, sensuous, abandoned, and ultimately liberating. This is all part of the framework.

I actually enjoyed this series. Although I didn't think i would with all the male on male and female on female sex scenes. Overall, these books were written well. And i love the time period the Roquelaure is a pseudonym for the author Anne Rice. Under this name she wrote The Sleeping Beauty Quartet which is a series of four novels.
