Men dressed like fops but carried deadly swords. Women flirted outrageously yet still lived under many societal restrictions. The Guilds of London still ruled their members and the country was still uneasily putting itself back together after the upheavals of the Civil War. The women look like Restoration beauties but are the men supposed to be playing dress up in Tudor clothes?

Apr 11, Nina rated it it was ok. This book was okay. Temperance and Jack's relationship was cute but nothing compelling. It was nice to see a strong female protagonist but perhaps some more real conflict and uncertainty could have improved the story. I wish there was more history and character development given that the story takes place during such a big historical event, the London Fires.
I was also not a huge fan of the author's abrupt perspective changes. Apr 14, Marti rated it really liked it Shelves: adult. A fun quick read. Romance set in London, , featuring the Great Fire. A little silliness but overall the female protagonist was a mostly strong, likeable character. I hate romances with whiny weak women and pushy rapey men.
Oct 05, Jan rated it it was ok Shelves: romance , english. Temperance Challinor is respectable small shop owner until the great fires in London burn her out. Her lover Jack has two lives--one at the Court of the late 's and one as an interent lutist. But she knows only of the musician and sets out for his home village.
Much more that I expect from Harlequin. May 23, Jenn rated it really liked it. Aug 29, Flitterkit rated it liked it Shelves: romance , ebook. This was a fun romp. Not very fleshed out for a historical, but fun nonetheless. Dec 20, Penel Smith rated it really liked it. A fun read.
